Janine Wesselmann is known internationally for her brilliant impressionistic style and discerning approach to her subjects. She works primarily in France and out of her studio in West Redding, CT.

She has been noted by collectors and critics alike for her parodies of European and American social life, which offer a satirical look at society while remaining true to the impressionistic genre. Janine has discovered and painted subjects throughout the world, from the social and political capitals of Europe to the most remote islands of the Caribbean. She is the first American woman to be accepted into the Collection 'd Art Modern de la ville de Paris, France

Janine was born in 1947 in upstate New York. She spent her formative years in Morocco, Iran, France, Spain, Ecuador, and Haiti, following her parents' diplomatic assignments.

She was drawing and painting intensely by the age of six, inspired by the color and drama of camel caravans, whirling dervishes, Caribbean markets, African landscapes, art soirees in Paris, Rome, and Madrid. She returned to the United States for her formal education where she earned a BS degree from Cornell University in 1969. Later, she studied portraiture in Europe.

She spent the next ten years in the Caribbean, sketching 16 hours a day, recording people from all walks of life. Her fascination with the psychological motivation of human behavior and interaction with the interior studies of café life drew the attention of critics, museums and collectors.

Janine has been included in Who's Who of American women since 1983. She was the first American to show at the Exposition du Printemps, France, and the Centro Culturale, Rome, for which she was awarded the official endorsement of the state of Connecticut. Her Retrospective in England at the home of the Dukes of Buckingham led to her award for Leadership in the Arts, Cambridge, England. In 1997 she was named Cultural Emissary to France.
